Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

Salary Range
$126,100.00 - $208,000.00

What Is the Opportunity?

The Travelers Enterprise Payment & Billing Data & Analytics team is seeking a talented data modeler to assist with the design and implementation of Payment and Billing databases. As a data modeler, you will be working closely with data stewards, data architects, business architects, solution architects and data analysts to implement data modeling solutions to streamline and support payment and billing systems. You will work to ensure corresponding physical data models map to the logical data models.

To ensure success as a data modeler, you should have in-depth knowledge of 3NF and dimensional logical data modeling methods as well as excellent communication skills. Ultimately, a top-notch data modeler should be able to design models that reduce data redundancy, streamline data movements, and improve enterprise information management.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and deploy database models for application development to support business applications, ensuring system scalability, security, performance, and reliability.
  • Incorporate core data management competencies including data governance, data security and data quality.
  • Perform data analysis and data modeling for operational applications and analytical databases.
  • Partner with Information Architect to analyze and translate business requirements into fully detailed logical data models.
  • Engage the business users to assess their information needs.
  • Determine how the various entities are related and develop entity relationship diagrams that represent the connections among the entities.
  • Identify each entity's characteristics and properties and ensure that the entities can be differentiated within the model.
  • Develop a logical data model and validate the model to ensure that it serves the needs of the business application and its consumers.
  • Transform the logical representation of the model into a physical representation and work with database administrators to instantiate and manage the data.
  • Collaborate with the BI and Analytics teams on creating the optimized, reusable semantic model, complete with metadata and lineage information.
  • Optimize the model to ensure predictable performance.
  • Maintain the metadata - the "data about the data" describing the data model, its structure, and semantics.
  • Recommend and establish standards, guidelines, and procedures for model design and maintenance.Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent training with data tools, techniques, and manipulation.
    • Five years of hands-on experience with 3NF logical, dimensional, and physical data modeling.
    • In depth knowledge of the Erwin or Hackolade data modeling tool or similar modeling tool
    • Must possess deep P&C industry experience and business knowledge, with Billing & Payment functional knowledge a strong plus
      Education, Work Experience, & Knowledge
      • Bachelor's Degree in STEM related field or equivalent
      • Ten years of related experience
      • Advanced knowledge of tools, techniques, and manipulation including cloud platforms, programming languages, and modern software engineering practices.
      • Proficient in industry standard techniques for data modeling. The Data Modeler must be proficient in 3rd normal form relational modeling. Dimensional modeling experience would be a strong added value for online analytical processing.
      • Proven experience in an enterprise environment developing relational databases
      • Proven experience developing models for Business Intelligence solutions
      • Strong analytical, data profiling and problem-solving skills
      • Strong verbal and written communication skills
      • Advanced SQL skills
      • In depth knowledge of modeling methodologies and techniques.
      • In depth knowledge of facilitation and conflict resolution processes.
      • Strong consultative, facilitation and consensus building skills
      • Ability to be both strategic and tactical in day-to-day interactions
      • Ability to establish credibility, influence, and effective working relationships with peers and stakeholders at all levels across the organization
      • Experience in cloud-based environments and services is a strong plus (e.g., AWS, Azure)
      • Metadata management and related tools.
      • Relational and document database technologies.
      • Business process modeling preferred.
      • Physical data modeling for document stores preferred
      • Strong leadership skills with the ability to engage with other leaders and networks to solve problems as well as work to improve the entire engineering organization by teaching others and sharing knowledge while creating opportunities for others to showcase and develop skills.
      • Excellent communication skills with the ability to describe technology concepts in ways the business can understand, document effectively, collaborate across disparate groups, and model and assist others in the practice of mindful communication, active listening, and messaging.

        • Strong delivery skills including the ability to determine the software design strategy and methodology to be used for efforts, use automated tests, analysis, and informed feedback loops to ensure the quality and production readiness of work before release, monitor the health of work efforts and that of adjacent systems.

        • Strong problem solver who utilizes data and proofs of concepts to find creative solutions to difficult problems involving a significant number of factors with broad implications, reflects on solutions, measures impact, and uses that information to ideate and optimize.
        • Excellent communication skills with the ability to develop business partnerships, describe technology concepts in ways the business can understand, document initiatives in a concise and clear manner, and empathetically and attentively listen to others thoughts and ideas.
        • Ability to lead and take action even when there is no clear owner, inspire and motivate others, and be effective at influencing team members.
