Job Description Summary The Senior Director, Data Management
position, is a senior role within the Business Insurance
Information Management and Analytics team. This person will be
responsible for leading our Data Quality initiatives across
Business Insurance. This is a top priority for Business Insurance
in 2021 and is an exciting opportunity to provide real value to our
Business Insurance data consumers. This position will have direct
reports.
We are looking for someone who has:
--- Experience in executing data management strategies to broad and
varied audiences
--- Passion for the data management space including the ability to
sell the merits of data management to non-believers
--- Experience working in a matrixed organization; influencing the
work of non-direct reports to incorporate data management practices
in their agile development work
--- Experience in developing quality best practices and standards
as well as methods of monitoring and reporting on those
standards
--- Experience with data governance processes and forums This
person will be responsible for the execution of our Business
Insurance Data Quality strategy. This person will also be
instrumental in the overall BI Data Management practice and support
the development of our Chapter. These responsibilities include:--
Implement a process to identify and monitor our critical data
elements--and assets Develop and lead our Data Stewards in all
things quality Support the design and implementation of the BI Data
Management Operating Model and Governance Structures Support our
Cloud migration; ensuring the necessary Data Quality practices,
controls and monitoring are in place Support our DataLog, powered
by Alation, and MetaHub and ensuring quality information is
captured in our metadata tools Accountable for strategies and
policies to ensure data consistency, accuracy, timeliness, validity
and completeness Develop procedures and processes to certify data
quality for business purposes Meet with leadership to prioritize
data quality requirements and specifications Actively promote a
knowledge sharing culture Articulate and influence guiding
principles and frameworks that align with the strategic vision
Advanced understanding and influencing of emerging trends and new
technologies in data quality Work closely with Enterprise Data &
Analytics and our Data Quality working group to select an
Enterprise data quality tool Lead the implementation of Data
Quality tools for BI Serve on the Enterprise Data & Analytics Data
Quality group with other DQ Leads cross the company Data
Governance: Ensures adoption of defined data policies, standards
and best practices across the line of business Expertise in design,
development and implementation of innovative governance practices,
roles, responsibilities across multiple data management disciplines
Applies expert understanding of overall physical and logical data
model and of data relationships, mapping, lineage and business
rules Data Stewardship: Facilitates connections among data stewards
within your organization and across the enterprise Establishes best
practices and expected deliverables Accountable for compliance of
business intelligence reporting with applicable security policies.
Responsible for partnering with audit on compliance reviews
Responsible for partnering with Information security on policy
content, creation, maintenance and awareness. Data Culture:
Partners with enterprise colleagues to mature Travelers data
Designs tools, processes and workflows to capture knowledge, find
information and maintain its relevance Actively promotes a
knowledge sharing culture and value proposition while generating
awareness of initiatives throughout the organization Articulates
and influences guiding principles and frameworks that align with
the strategic vision Oversees the creation, maintenance and
governance of taxonomies and ensures its applicability to content
and/or data Advanced understanding and influencing of emerging
trends and new technologies in knowledge management Leadership:
Integrates work efforts within respective business and enterprise
portfolios. Oversees portfolios and ensures resources are
appropriately aligned to implement on going projects, enhancements,
initiatives and/or problem resolution. Provides leadership by
driving priorities, assigning work and coaching / mentoring unit
members. Responsible for the recruitment and development of needed
talent for meeting long-term business goals. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Mathematics) or Business. 8 years of relevant data and analytics
experience required. Education, Work Experience, & Knowledge Master
knowledge of Data Management tools, techniques and programing
languages Demonstrates advanced understanding of overall data
models, data relationships, mapping lineage and business rules SQL
knowledge 12 years of data management or relevant analytics
experience 5 years of leadership experience Job Specific Technical
Skills & Competencies Ability to communicate thoughts/designs/ideas
in an unambiguous manner and adjusts communication based on
audience. Exhibits active and effective communication skills with
team members - including active listening and effective written and
verbal communication skills. Effectively contributes and
communicates with the immediate team and leadership. Able to
expertly diagnose root causes, solve complex problems, and
collaborate effectively with business and technical teams. Able to
break a problem down into manageable pieces, evaluate potential
risks/alternatives, and implement effective, timely solutions.
Carefully evaluates alternative risks and solutions before taking
action including escalating situations as appropriate. Demonstrates
sound decision making and problem resolution skills. Optimizes the
use of all available resources. Often consulted by team members
and/or business partners for problem resolution and guidance. Able
to promote, maintain, and enhance partnerships across the
organization to achieve objectives and engage stakeholders. Able to
influence project stakeholders and team members. Practices
objectivity and openness to others' views. Able to develop and
leverage business and/or vendor partnerships, consult on business
priorities, and optimize value through solution identification
aligned with business objectives, goals, and future data direction.
Demonstrates ability to identify critical project tasks and
establish clear priorities while keeping the overall strategy in
mind. Effectively communicates risks, issues and escalates
appropriately. Able to accurately estimate the tasks and resources
