Manager, Data Governance - Ontology and Data Modeling
The role of the Manager Data Governance, Ontology and Data Modeling
is to develop, implement, and maintain enterprise ontologies in
support of Capital One's Data Strategy.
This role will be responsible for owning and maintaining
agreed-upon data definitions cross-functionally, understanding how
and why data is critical for their domain and ensuring that
stakeholders adhere to specified data standards. They will also
help ensure the quality of the data, managing compliance for the
data standards, data patterns and policies set, responsible for
defining and understanding data use cases within Commercial Bank
required to support new product initiatives as well as for their
evolving business environment.
The Data Steward will build partnerships across Commercial that
will help them understand business problems to solve using data.
They will also support the modeling of attributes, entities, and
products that support business application and use cases. The Data
Steward will be a partner to help resolve operational and
analytical obstacles leveraging their data knowledge.
The Manager Data Governance, Ontology and Data Modeling should be
capable of supporting an emerging and evolving semantic program at
Capital One, capable of clearly communicating and advocating the
value of using semantic technology and knowledge organization
concepts.
Primary Responsibilities
- Define clear and actionable problem statements to help teams
deliver results while displaying a comprehensive understanding of
ontologies and optimized data models
- Leverage customer insights to influence priorities and roadmap
development while advocating for and driving alignment between
stakeholders in the development of acceptance criteria
- Own and prioritize the near-term Ontology and Data Modeling
roadmap to deliver on business outcomes, quickly identifying points
of leverage in complex problems or systems, and utilizing data
effectively to define success metrics and measurable outcomes
- Responsible for assisting in defining standardization practices
partnering with business and product teams to ensure global and
semantic standards are followed.
- Own inventory and cataloging of data products and entities
ensuring they are maintained across all tools.
- Communicate and advocate the value of Capital One's efforts in
ontologies, semantics, and standardization across the
business.
- Contribute to data integration and mapping efforts to harmonize
data advocating for the value of standardization across the
business.
- Acts as SME working cross functionally to govern data products
and entities meaning/understanding to partners, seeking
approval/consensus across Commercial Bank.
- Execute policies and standards established by data governing
bodies meeting regulations and audit needs to support Commercial
operations.
- Utilize balanced judgment in decisions about risks of both
actions taken and not taken while innovating on ways to iterate
faster in a well-managed way for the immediate team
- Understand and leverage technology and end-state architecture
vision in partnership with Technology, Machine Learning, and other
Capital One teams to support the development and integration of
semantics in Capital One products and services, driving
comprehensive design decisions out of white space technical
problems
- Understand and adhere to W3C standards related to ontologies,
in particular RDF, RDFS, OWL, SKOS, and SHACL
- Contribute to team culture and recruiting by leading activities
to attract and retain top talent and mentoring and developing
junior ontology and data modeling associates Role-Based

- Product: Develop and implement new product and pricing
strategies for various solutions, including Commercial Lending,
Capital Markets, Treasury Management and Deposit Services, and
Corporate Credit Cards; lead product level modeling/analytics
- Execution: Manage and sequence delivery of business intent,
build business requirements and execute against the product
strategy. Oversee multiple projects and programs concurrently
- Clear results orientation: Display an intense focus on
achieving both short and long term goals. Drive and execute an
agenda in an uncertain and fluid environment
- Partnership: Work closely with colleagues across Capital One
including: Technology, Sales, Operations, Finance, Product and
others to drive improvement in quality, volume, and
profitability

- Strong executive communication skills: Impeccable written and
oral communication credentials, coupled with strategic influencing

interpersonal and negotiation skills Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in information science, computer science,
engineering, library science, ontology, semantics or computational
linguistics
- At least 4 years' experience in a metadata field of work
(ontology, taxonomy, semantics or computational linguistics)
- At least 4 years' experience or training in using W3C standards
including linked and canonical data and ontologies ( JSON, XML,
RDF, RDFS, OWL, and SKOS)
- At least 4 years' experience or training in ontology and linked
data tools (Prot--g--, TopQuadrant, PoolParty, Stardog, AnzoGraph,
Neptune, or Data.World)
- At least 4 years' experience or training with SQL or SPARQL
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or PhD in information science, computer
science, engineering, library science, ontology, semantics or
computational linguistics
- At least 5 years of experience in analysis role
- At least 2 years of experience in financial services
- At least 1 year of experience in consulting
- At least 2 years of experience in data oriented role At this

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are
listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information
is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these
locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay
at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be
prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly
worked.
Location is New York City: $154,905 - $182,753 for Manager,
Ontology and Data Modeling
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the
pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized
salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be
reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive
compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term
incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non
discretionary depending on the plan.
