JOB SUMMARY Responsible for the overall operational supervision of
Hartford Healthcare entities inpatient coding. Accepts
responsibility for resolution of inpatient coding timeliness,
completeness, accuracy, abstracting, and data entry for optimal
reimbursement, statistics and compliance. Demonstrates effective
and efficient work operation of the unit by managing staff and
assigning work according to business needs and collecting data to
monitor progress. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES General * Provides direct
supervision of inpatient coding staff and contractors to insure
consistent and accurate inpatient coding and Diagnosis Related
Groups (DRG) assignment. * Oversees daily workflow and reports
(Epic, financial, coding, etc.) to ensure timely coding completion
for billing, as well as ensuring the acceptable balance between
productivity and quality of individual coder work assignment with
coder skill and individual competence always in full view. *
Oversees and participates in the review and correction of Epic
combined accounts, coding edits and denials. * Works with team to
resolve Epic issues and escalates as needed. * Participates in the
development of facility inpatient coding guidelines. * Serves as a
resource to inpatient coding staff for complex inpatient cases. *
Works to implement new regulatory changes related to inpatient
coding and reimbursement. Works with the Coding Quality and
Education Team to educate coders on these changes. * Evaluates
results of internal and external audits for inpatient records with
the Coding Quality and Education team. Works with them to finalize
action plans and disseminate findings to the coders. * Participates
in hospital-wide work groups related to inpatient coding, denials
and reimbursement. * Fulfills compliance responsibilities related
to the position and performs other duties as assigned.
Training/Education * Manages the training of new coders to become
acclimated to the environment, and understanding internal coding
policies and procedures and documentation guidelines Communication
* Works with Coding Quality and Education team for appropriate
dissemination and communication of all regulation, policy, and
guideline changes (e.G. Code updates, coding guidelines, etc.) *
Seeks clarification from physicians or other staff in cases when
documentation is absent, ambiguous, or contradictory.
Leadership/Supervisory * Evaluate staff performance and initiate
corrective action plans as necessary * Prepare work plans, resolve
work-related problems such as performance, workload, and scheduling
* Abides by HHC's Guiding Principles of Safety, Integrity, Caring
and Excellence. Other * Works closely with Patient Financial
Services to maintain unbilled Key Performance Indicators (KPI),
track and report unbilled amount for all HHC entities. * Supports
and participates in special projects and assignments. * Provides
subject matter expert guidance to staff, clinical documentation
specialists and others as required. * Abides by the Standards of
Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information
Management Association and adheres to official coding guidelines
Reporting Structure * This position reports to HHC Director HIM
Coding/CDI Direct Reports * 25-40 staff members Nature of
Supervision: * Contributes to the efficient operation of the
department by establishing priorities, eliminating obstacles, and
resolving problems. * Accountable for ensuring that the inpatient
coding team consistently meets quality and quantity expectations. *
Responsible for the ongoing development of meaningful goals and
objectives for the inpatient coding team that aligns with the
vision of the entire HHC HIM Facility Coding team. * Manage within
budgetary guidelines * Advances the Inpatient Coding team by
influencing desired H3W Leadership Behaviors * Fosters an
environment of teamwork and service excellence for the Inpatient
Coding team across HHC entities. * Leads and manages multiple
concurrent projects, prioritizes tasks and adapts to frequent
changes in priorities. * Recognizes necessary changes in priority
of tasks and allocation of resources, and brings them to the
attention of leader
