Utilizing a collaborative approach with patients and other members of the interdisciplinary team in defining and meeting the healthcare needs and goals of patients, families and community.Specific Duties And ResponsibilitiesThe Staff Nurse in the MBU is charged with and responsible for:

  • Maintains compliance with National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG): patient identification, communication, universal protocol, infection, control, medication management, etc.
  • Utilizes BCMA for the safe administration of all medications.
  • Maintains the safety of newborns and mothers by adherence to the infant identification policy.
  • Reviews safety measures and educates patients on infant identification bands and HUGS tag.
  • Educates patients and support persons on optimal infant nutrition and supports and respects family decision on feeding method(s).
  • Monitors and documents the hemodynamic status of patients, including neonates.
  • Promotes 24 hours rooming-in by supporting patients at their bedside.
  • Works collaboratively with other members of the interdisciplinary team including Social Worker.
  • Monitors and follow guidelines for newborn screening within 24-36 hours.
  • Initiates and monitors administration of phototherapy, per guidelines.
  • Complies with orders for glucose monitoring and educates patients.
  • Ensures that neonates receive hearing screening prior to discharge.
  • Evaluates patients learning needs and provides education specific to diagnosis and status, evaluating and documenting level of understanding.
  • Assumes the duties of charge nurse and delegates assignment to staff based on knowledge and expertise.
  • Identifies and escalates issues in a timely manner to supervisory personnel.
  • Advocates and educate patients on the importance of vaccinations such as Tdap, influenza, varicella, MMR, etc.
  • Utilizes the Columbia Suicide Screening tool in evaluating patients for suicidality and initiating safety measures for those identified as being high risk.
  • Evaluates patients' readiness for discharge and addresses patient needs by involving other members of the interdisciplinary team, as indicated.
  • Provides patients with After Visit Summary (AVS) document prior to discharge and ensures that follow-up appointments were made for both mother and newborn.Minimum Qualifications
    • A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
    • Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).Special NoteFor assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit. In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).Department Preferences
