Job Description Position Summary The Psychiatric Social Health
Technician (PSHT) provides direct patient observation, behavioral
support, and safety monitoring for incarcerated patients with acute
psychiatric conditions in a secure behavioral health setting. The
PSHT works under the supervision of registered nurses and
psychiatrists to maintain a therapeutic and secure environment,
prevent self-harm or violence, and assist in daily patient care
activities. This role is hands-on and safety-focused within a
locked forensic psychiatric unit. Key Responsibilities Maintain
continuous observation of patients, including suicide watch and
close monitoring Identify and report behavioral changes,
escalation, or psychiatric symptoms Assist in crisis intervention
and de-escalation techniques Support nurses and providers in
delivering patient care Assist patients with activities of daily
living (ADLs) Escort patients to medical appointments, medication
administration, court, or activities Maintain unit safety by
checking rooms and monitoring contraband Participate in restraint
and seclusion procedures per facility policy Document patient
behaviors and interactions accurately Collaborate with clinical
staff and correction officers to ensure safety and order Required
Qualifications Minimum 2 years behavioral health experience
(inpatient psych, detox, residential, correctional, or psychiatric
emergency) High School Diploma or GED Current AHA BLS Certification
Ability to work in a secure correctional healthcare environment
Strong observation, communication, and crisis-management skills
Preferred Qualifications Experience in forensic or inpatient
psychiatric settings Prior mental health technician or behavioral
health aide experience De-escalation or crisis prevention training
(CPI, Handle With Care, PMCS, etc.) Work Environment Locked
correctional psychiatric unit Direct interaction with patients
experiencing severe mental illness Potential exposure to aggressive
or unpredictable behaviors Standing, walking, and occasional
