Overview of the Position

Please note, candidates pursuing exams as well as those not pursuing exams will be considered for this role. This role can be part of our Actuarial Student Program for an individual meeting requirements for entry into the program.

The line has support and visibility at the senior management levels, making it a high-profile opportunity.

The position will be part of a team responsible for understanding the performance of the Commercial Auto class plans and using this information to inform future decisions on the line. Our auto product is changing quickly, and we need to understand the effectiveness of our changes to position ourselves for continuous improvement. The candidate is expected to work closely with multiple business segments to drive auto profitability and influence good business decisions. Potential opportunity to manage two students.


Specifically, the individual in this role will:

  • Participate in the Commercial Auto Loss Ratio Projection analysis projecting future loss ratios and highlighting risks and future profit opportunities. Present findings and recommendations to partners to guide future decisions.
  • Lead the Commercial Auto Rate Indications process that projects rate needed to achieve a 15% return on equity. Underlying analyses leverage internal and external data sources and include loss development factors, loss and premium trend projections, understanding current and future expense ratios, etc.
  • Lead innovation effort to incorporate predictive modeling into rate indication process.
  • Develop and analyze monitoring reports serving as leading indicators to possible changes in rate indications and loss ratio projections.
  • Leverage advanced actuarial techniques to continue enhancing analyses as well as gaining a deeper understanding of the auto line of business. An example would include using advanced actuarial tools to find drivers of changes in loss cost trends.
  • Become a subject matter expert regarding available Auto data and participate on upcoming data projects.

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2-5+ years' experience in insurance or related industry.
  • Progress towards ACAS/FCAS or a General Insurance track ASA/FSA preferred but not required. We will consider filling this role as part of our actuarial student program for a candidate meeting requirements for entry into the program.
  • Very strong technical, analytical and data skills; Excel required and experience with SAS, SQL, R and/or Python preferred.
  • Experience working independently as well as part of a team.
  • Self-motivation, innovative, time-management, project-management, and customer-management skills will be beneficial in this role.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to audiences of various levels and diverse technical backgrounds.
  • Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Process improvement mindset and skilled at developing efficiencies.
  • Thought leader. Seeks new ways to approach analysis and projects and solve business problems.
  • Experience building successful business partnerships
