- The AP-Emergency Department is a member of the clinical team
providing care for patients in the Emergency Department at
Connecticut Children's Medical Center. The APs main function is to
deliver comprehensive quality patient care in the acute care
setting. Practices autonomously or in collaboration when needed
with the physician care team, utilizing advanced assessment and
physical examination skills, to assess patient care needs and
develop the appropriate plan of care. The Emergency Department AP
practice encompasses various levels of acuity including behavioral
health. Supports and demonstrates Family Centered Care principles
and evidence based practice when interacting with patients and
their families and with co-workers.
- ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assess, diagnose, treat and manage patients acute physical
and/or mental healthcare needs.
Reviews and interprets diagnostic tests, lab results and imaging
studies and determines the appropriate plan of care.
Performs physical examinations and treats acute illness, urgent and
emergent matters within prescribed guidelines. Medically clears
psychiatric patients and performs needs assessment to determine if
psychiatric referral is necessary. Coordinate patient care with
team members, other staff, community agencies and a wide variety of
Recognizes situations which require the immediate attention of a
physician, and initiates life-saving procedures when necessary.
Consults with sub-specialist as needed for patient care
Participate in teaching and learning in an integrated academic
Document clearly and accurately within the electronic medical
record and satisfy medical recording requirements.
Participate in peer review, development and consultation.
Participate in special initiatives, programs and services
Precepting of APRN and PA Graduate students and mentoring newly
hired AP team members.
Maintain professional expertise through involvement in professional
organizations and continuing education programs.
Demonstrates knowledge of the age-related differences and needs of
patients in appropriate, specific populations and applies them to

- Previous Emergency Department experience desired.
- Registered and Certified Physician Assistant or
Pediatric/Family Nurse Practitioner with a minimum of two years'
experience preferred. Bilingual in English and Spanish
