SUMMARY

  • The CT Children's Lead AP-Emergency Department is accountable for direct oversight of all advanced practitioners within their purview including AP education and development, developing AP goals, assisting in the AP hiring process and scheduling process for the AP group. The Lead AP is the liaison to the Emergency Department MDs, Nursing staff, and related ED positions. The Lead AP will work closely with the ED Medical Director and Division Chief to achieve unit-based goals, develop policy and procedures, advance quality of care and improve patient and family experience.
    The Lead AP is a member of the clinical team providing comprehensive and quality care for patients in the Emergency Department at Connecticut Children's Medical Center. Practices autonomously or in collaboration when needed with the physician care team, utilizing advanced assessment and physical examination skills, to assess patient care needs and develop the appropriate plan of care. The Lead AP practices encompasses various levels of acuity including behavioral health. Supports and demonstrates Family Centered Care principles and evidence based practice when interacting with patients and their families and with co-workers.
  • ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Balance of administrative responsibilities and clinical care

    Developing AP goals and objectives and clinical policies and procedures

    Assisting physicians and management/administration to determine advanced practitioner role in achieving hospital initiatives in clinical care

    Assisting with scheduling of coverage based on needs of the organization

    Overseeing AP education and development

    Involvement in the recruiting, training, and retention of ED APs

    Represent the ED AP group at regular meetings with physicians and other related ED or hospital groups

    Provide medical and psychiatric evaluations and care commensurate with level of training

    Reviews and interprets diagnostic tests, lab results and imaging studies and determines the appropriate plan of care.

    Performs physical examinations and treats acute illness, urgent and emergent matters within prescribed guidelines. Medically clears psychiatric patients and performs needs assessment to determine if psychiatric referral is necessary. Coordinate patient care with team members, other staff, community agencies and a wide variety of providers.

    Recognizes situations which require the immediate attention of a physician, and initiates life-saving procedures when necessary.

    Consults with sub-specialist as needed for patient care

    Participate in teaching and learning in an integrated academic model.

    Document clearly and accurately within the electronic medical record and satisfy medical recording requirements.

    Participate in peer review when invited in clinically pertinent situations

    Participate in special initiatives, programs and services encouraged.

    Precepting of APRN and PA Graduate students and mentoring newly hired AP team members.

    Maintain professional expertise through involvement in professional organizations and continuing education programs.

    Demonstrates knowledge of the age-related differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations and applies them to practice.

    Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/ families.

    Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the Connecticut Children's STANDARDS.Requirements:
    • Completion of Sedation Certification after 1 - 2 years of successful employment in the Emergency Department at CT Children's.
    • Previous Emergency Department experience required
    • Registered and Certified Physician Assistant or Pediatric/Family Nurse Practitioner with a minimum of five years' of practice as an APP within an ED setting. Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
