**Job Summary**

Performs a variety of duties in and around the buildings of the hospital complex maintaining and repairing machinery and mechanical equipment, including, but not limited to, heating, cooling and ventilation systems. Refrigeration experience is preferred not required.

**JOB QUALIFICATIONS**

**Education:** 2 year apprenticeship or equivalent

**Experience:** 3-5 years minimum

**Licensure:** D-2 or S-2 State of Ct License

**PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT**

Physical effort is required. Some lifting is involved. Work positions include standing, kneeling and climbing. Moderate stress encountered in emergency situations. Position requires ability to frequently push/pull/lift objects ,pre than 100 lbs., perform difficult manipulative, gross body and hand-eye coordination skills; bend, walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods; see objects closely and hear normal sounds with some background noises. Position requires ability to concentrate on fine detail with interruption and attend to tasks for more than 60 minutes at a time. Individual must be able to understand and relate to theories behind several related concepts and remember multiple tasks given over long periods of time.

**ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS**

Precautions must be taken when working around equipment or troubleshooting systems. Employee may frequently be exposed to high, low and sudden fluctuations in temperature; grease and oil; bodily injuries; loud noises and high humidity or wetness.

**JOB DUTIES**

The following description of the job responsibilities and standards are intended to reflect the significant responsibilities and duties the job, but is not intended to describe duties and/or other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.

**1. Assists in installing, operating, maintaining and repairing all Hospital mechanical systems and equipment.**

2.1 Maintains and repairs complete heating and ventilation systems, pumps, machinery, motors, air and vacuum compressors according to established procedures and manufacturer's specifications.

2.2 Performs lubrication, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting to all hospital mechanical and electromechanical equipment according to manufacturer's specifications.

2.3 Installs mechanical , HVAC equipment, controls and piping as required.

2.4 When on-call, assist the Coverage Mechanic in handling off duty shift coverage by properly repairing and/or reporting all plant maintenance and emergency requirements and clearly communicating equipment status to the on-duty Coverage Mechanic.

2.5 Recommends ordering and replacement of stock parts based upon equipment and system needs.

**2. Maintains commitment to personal growth and competency.**

3.1 Participates in mandatory inservice at the Hospital.

3.2 Updates technical skills to meet the maintenance requirements of new equipment.

3.3 Maintains current knowledge of technical changes in equipment and technology.

**3. Contributes to the safe operation of the Plant and Engineering Department.**

4.1 Takes all precautions required by Hospital standards and OSHA requirements by wearing all safety equipment necessary for the specific job.

4.2 Assesses environment for safety hazards which could harm patients, visitors or other hospital employees and reports them to appropriate supervisor.

4.3 Demonstrates ability to use all equipment in the department safely and according to manufacturer's specifications.

4.4 Takes special care to protect the safety of patients, staff and others when performing work in all areas by securing tools, debris and materials.

4.5 Maintains all tools and equipment properly and inspects for proper function prior to use.

4.6 Maintains work area in a clean and neat manner according to department standards.

**4. Contributes to the efficient operation of the department.**

5.1 Recognizes other department employees' need for help and assists as workload permits.

5.2 Demonstrates consistent ability to perform all minor and emergency repairs at the Hospital during night and weekend shifts.

5.3 Identifies major problems and repairs and reports need to the supervisor.

5.4 Completes and returns all work orders according to departmental guidelines.

5.5 Assists apprentices in learning the trade and learning good work habits.

5.6 Interprets blueprints, sketches and written/verbal instructions.

5.7 Maintains construction and equipment maintenance records according to departmental and regulatory requirements.

5.8 Attends all mandatory hospital initiated training.

**. Contributes to the effective operations of the Hospital by demonstrating dependability in job performance.**

6.1 Demonstrates dependability on the job by adhering to the departmental attendance standards.

6.2 Contributes to the time management of the department by being punctual to work and on job assignments according to departmental standards.

6.3 Contributes to effective scheduling practices by providing sufficient notice of unavailability for work or late arrival according to departmental standards.
